In a debate on fair competition on the cruise market, John Denham called on the Minister to prevent the misuse of European regional development fund money, by using his powers. John said that the Minister had a personal responsibility to ensure compliance with the rules, which means taking action to prevent Liverpool from breaking them.
The Minister however, yet again, is saying he cannot act.

John said to the Minister:
“Ministers have always had the ability to prevent the misuse of European regional development fund money, if they thought the misuse would leave the Government liable to action by the Commission. There must be legal powers for him to take to guard against the risk of infraction proceedings by the European Commission.”
The debate was secured by neighbouring MP Caroline Nokes, and included contributions by MPs of all parties from Dover, Southampton, the New Forest, South Sheilds and Tyneside.
